Country Lanes has developed a series of exciting and easy to follow cycle hire routes to help you explore the Lake District and North West of England! Our routes range from 7 to 30 miles, cycling on quiet country lanes and bridleways. The user friendly format is easy to follow, using a mixture of written instructions and a visual map, marked with waypoints. Whichever cycling route you choose, you will be guaranteed fantastic views and memories that will last a life time! These are just some of fantastic cycle hire routes we offer:

Round About Windermere and Bowness
A circular cycle route exploring the surrounding countryside of the Windermere and Bowness area.
Distance - 7.5 miles/12 kilometres
Profile - 215 metres climb/downhill
Riding Time - 1 hour fast; 2.5 hours slow
Terrain - A mixture of country lanes and bridleways on undulating terrain, with a few short climbs
Classification - Suitable for all

Along the shore of Windermere to Hawkshead
An exciting cycling route taking you across lake Windermere on the car ferry, then cycling along the beautiful lake shore to Hawkshead village and back. Our most popular route!
Distance - 17.6 miles/28.3 kilometres
Profile - 662 metres climb/downhill
Start Point - Windermere Cycle Hire Centre
Riding Time - 3 hour fast; 4.5 hours slow
Terrain - A mixture of country lanes and bridleways on undulating terrain, with a few short climbs
Classification - Suitable for all riders with a basic level of fitness

On the Trail of Beatrix Potter
An interesting historical route taking you across lake Windermere on the car ferry, towards Hill Top, Beatrix Potters former home. Beautiful North West countryside awaits!
Distance - 10.7 miles/17.2 kilometres
Profile - 520 metres climb/downhill

Riding Time - 1.5 hour fast; 3 hours slow
Terrain - A mixture of country lanes and bridleways on undulating terrain, with a few short climbs

Crosthwaite and Knipe Tarn
A challenging cycling route exploring picturesque, unspoilt Lakeland countryside. This route takes you past plenty of country pubs and inns.
Distance - 19.6 miles/31.5 kilometres
Profile - 783 metres climb/downhill

Riding Time - 3 hour fast; 5.5 hours slow
Terrain - Mainly on quiet, undulating country lanes with a few climbs and exciting descents Classification - Suitable for riders with a reasonable level of fitness

Cartmel Priory and Holker Hall
Take a relaxing cruise on Windermere Lake with your bikes, from Bowness Bay to Lakeside. Here you explore the southern tip of the Lakes towards Cartmel and Holker Hall, one of the oldest villages in the region!
Distance - 21 miles/33.8 kilometres
Profile - 650 metres climb/downhill

Bike Bus Service - Bus Number 800
Want to cycle in a different location? As part of the Golakes Travel project, the local bus company Stagecoach has launched a new Bike Bus! The bike bus service runs between Windermere Railway station, where we are based, all the way to Keswick and Whinlatter forest. "This is an exciting, new initiative and the service can take up to 12 bikes enabling you to explore a wider area of the Lake District National Park. You can even take the bus to destinations such as Rydal or Grasmere, then cycle back along quiet country roads and bridleways" - Guy Fitzgerald (Company Director).
