Explore the countryside that inspired Wordsworth and gave life to Beatrix Potter’s charming story-book characters.
Your Lake District holiday will be on the fells above Lake Windermere; there are hills to climb but the rewards are spectacular, with wide-ranging views of this most spectacular of English landscapes.
You'll be based at Ambleside on the shores of lake itself, one of the prettiest villages in the area. It's just a short step to leave the bustle of the 21st century behind, and make your way into the timeless solitude of the hills.
Day 1 - Arrival
You are welcomed to Windermere railway station or you can make your way directly to Ambleside where you will be presented with your OS map, route sheets, Country Lanes T-shirt and souvenir water bottle. You can spend the day exploring the restaurants and sights of this popular lakeside village.
Day 2 - An Amble from Ambleside
Today you amble alongside the river Rothay to Rydal Water and Grasmere in one of the Lake District's prettiest valleys. Explore Dove Cottage, the Wordsworth Museum and Rydal Mount before making your way back to Ambleside for the evening.
Day 3 - Fells, Bridges and Crafts
The climb up Loughrigg Fell is rewarded by the gentle return through pasture and meadows to Skelwith Bridge, where an interesting diversion is to take in the 15-feet high Skelwith Force waterfall. Browse the crafts in the Kirkstone Galleries then set off back to Ambleside along the lower fells.
Day 4 Townend & Orrest Head
Follow fell side tracks that bring you to the preserved 17th Century farmhouse at Townend near the hamlet of Troutbeck. Walk off lunch along bridleways and country lanes to the final spectacular viewpoint of Orrest Head, overlooking Windermere town and lake, before dropping downhill to Ambleside and the end of your Lake District adventure.
